About
Kokshetau National Park (Kazakh: Көкшетау мемлекеттік ұлттық табиғи паркі) is located in northern Kazakhstan within Akmola and North Kazakhstan regions. Established in 1996, the park covers approximately 705 square miles (1,827 sq km) and protects one of Kazakhstan’s most scenic forest-and-lake landscapes.
Situated within the Kazakh Uplands, the park encompasses rolling hills, pine forests, granite outcrops, and numerous freshwater lakes. Its combination of woodland, steppe, and wetland ecosystems creates a striking contrast to the vast grasslands that dominate much of northern Kazakhstan.
The park is best known for its beautiful lakes, forested hills, and recreational opportunities. Visitors are drawn to crystal-clear lakes surrounded by pine forests, scenic viewpoints, and peaceful natural settings. Among the park’s most famous attractions are Lake Shalkar, Lake Imantau, and Lake Zerenda.
These lakes provide opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, and wildlife observation. Hiking, camping, cycling, and nature photography are also popular activities, making the park a favorite destination for both local residents and international travelers.
Geographically, Kokshetau National Park consists of low mountain ridges, forested hills, rocky outcrops, grasslands, wetlands, and dozens of lakes. Elevations generally range from 1,000 to 3,100 feet (300–950 m), creating a landscape of gentle but scenic relief. Pine, birch, and aspen forests dominate much of the park, while open steppe grasslands occur between wooded areas.
Numerous freshwater lakes and marshes support aquatic ecosystems and add to the region’s ecological diversity. The park’s varied habitats make it one of the most biologically rich protected areas in northern Kazakhstan.
Wildlife within Kokshetau National Park reflects the transition between forest and steppe ecosystems. Mammals include elk, roe deer, wild boar, wolves, red foxes, badgers, lynx, and hares. The park’s forests provide important refuge for species that are uncommon in the surrounding open steppe.
Birdlife is especially abundant, with golden eagles, white-tailed eagles, cranes, black grouse, woodpeckers, owls, ducks, geese, and numerous migratory waterbirds inhabiting the region. Wetlands and lakes support fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates that contribute to the park’s ecological richness.
Kokshetau National Park plays a vital role in conserving northern Kazakhstan’s forest-steppe ecosystems and protecting important freshwater resources. The park safeguards biodiversity, preserves watersheds, and provides critical habitat for wildlife within a region increasingly influenced by agriculture and development.
Its conservation significance is often compared to Burabay National Park and Karkaraly National Park because of its scenic lakes, pine forests, and ecological diversity. Through its forested landscapes, pristine lakes, abundant wildlife, and recreational opportunities, Kokshetau National Park stands as one of Kazakhstan’s most treasured protected areas and a beautiful showcase of the natural heritage of the northern steppe.
