Tadoba Andhari National Park

Tadoba Andhari National Park is located in Chandrapur District in the state of Maharashtra in central India. Established as a national park in 1955 and later combined with the Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary to form the larger Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in 1995, the protected area covers approximately 240 square miles (625 sq km), while the broader tiger reserve extends over 660 square miles (1,727 sq km).

As Maharashtra’s oldest and largest national park, Tadoba is one of India’s premier wildlife destinations and among the country’s most successful tiger conservation landscapes.

The park is best known for its exceptional tiger sightings and rich wildlife. Often referred to as the “Jewel of Vidarbha,” Tadoba has earned an international reputation as one of the best places in India to observe wild Bengal tigers. Visitors from around the world come to explore its forests, lakes, and grasslands through guided jeep safaris.

Unlike some of India’s more heavily visited tiger reserves, Tadoba offers relatively open habitats that increase the likelihood of wildlife encounters. In addition to tigers, visitors frequently observe leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, and a wide variety of bird species.

Geographically, Tadoba Andhari National Park consists of a diverse landscape of dry deciduous forests, bamboo thickets, grasslands, rocky hills, and wetlands. The park takes its name from Tadoba Lake and the Andhari River, which flows through the reserve. Elevations are generally moderate, with forested hills creating scenic vistas across the landscape.

Teak forests dominate much of the park, interspersed with bamboo groves, meadows, and water bodies that provide critical habitat for wildlife. During the dry season, animals often congregate around lakes and waterholes, creating excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

Wildlife within Tadoba Andhari National Park is among the richest in India. The park supports a healthy population of Bengal Tiger and is one of the country’s most important tiger conservation areas. Other mammals include leopards, sloth bears, dholes (Indian wild dogs), striped hyenas, jungle cats, sambar deer, chital, nilgai, gaur, barking deer, and wild boar.

Birdlife is equally impressive, with more than 280 recorded species, including crested serpent eagles, changeable hawk-eagles, paradise flycatchers, Indian pittas, kingfishers, and owls. Marsh crocodiles inhabit some of the park’s lakes and rivers, while numerous reptiles, amphibians, and insects contribute to the reserve’s biodiversity.

Tadoba Andhari National Park plays a crucial role in India’s tiger conservation efforts and forms part of a broader network of protected forests in central India. The park safeguards critical habitat for large carnivores, protects important watersheds, and preserves one of the most ecologically significant dry forest ecosystems in the country.

Its conservation significance is often compared to Ranthambore National Park and Bandhavgarh National Park because of its tiger population, biodiversity, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
