About
Bohemian Switzerland National Park is located in the northwestern Czechia along the border with Germany and covers approximately 31 square miles (79 sq km). Established in 2000, the park protects one of Central Europe’s most spectacular sandstone landscapes.
It forms the Czech portion of a larger transboundary conservation area that connects with Saxon Switzerland National Park across the border. Situated northeast of Prague, the park preserves dramatic rock formations, deep forested valleys, narrow gorges, and scenic river landscapes.
Despite its relatively modest size, Bohemian Switzerland National Park contains some of the most distinctive geological features in Europe and is one of the Czech Republic’s premier nature destinations.
Bohemian Switzerland National Park is best known for its extraordinary sandstone formations and breathtaking viewpoints. Visitors are drawn to towering rock towers, natural arches, cliffs, and labyrinths sculpted by millions of years of erosion. The park’s most famous landmark is Pravčická Gate, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe and one of the country’s most iconic natural attractions.
Hiking is the park’s most popular activity, with an extensive network of trails leading to panoramic overlooks, secluded valleys, and unique geological features. Boat excursions through the narrow gorges of the Kamenice River provide another memorable way to experience the park’s beauty.
The geography of Bohemian Switzerland National Park was shaped by ancient sedimentary deposits that were uplifted and gradually carved by wind, water, and weathering. The resulting landscape consists of sandstone plateaus, cliffs, canyons, rock bridges, and isolated pinnacles that rise above dense forests. Deep valleys cut by rivers and streams create dramatic scenery throughout the park.
Vegetation includes beech forests, spruce woodlands, mixed deciduous forests, moss-covered ravines, and rare plant communities adapted to the cool, humid microclimates found among the sandstone formations. The combination of geology and vegetation creates a landscape that feels both rugged and enchanting.
Wildlife within Bohemian Switzerland National Park reflects the diversity of its forest and rocky habitats. Mammals include red deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, badgers, martens, and several bat species. Birdlife is particularly notable, with peregrine falcons, black storks, Eurasian eagle-owls, woodpeckers, and numerous forest birds inhabiting the park.
Peregrine falcons, once absent from the region, have successfully returned due to conservation efforts. Reptiles, amphibians, insects, and rare woodland species further contribute to the park’s biodiversity. The varied terrain provides shelter and breeding habitat for many species that thrive within the protected landscape.
Bohemian Switzerland National Park plays a vital role in protecting one of Europe’s finest sandstone wilderness regions. The park safeguards unique geological formations, mature forests, river ecosystems, and important habitats for wildlife. Conservation efforts focus on preserving biodiversity, restoring natural forest processes, and protecting sensitive geological features from excessive human impact.
Bohemian Switzerland is often compared to Saxon Switzerland National Park and Adršpach-Teplice Rocks because of its remarkable sandstone landscapes. Yet its combination of towering rock formations, scenic gorges, and Europe’s largest sandstone arch gives it a distinctive identity. Today, Bohemian Switzerland National Park stands as one of Central Europe’s most treasured natural areas, preserving a landscape where geology, forests, and wildlife create an environment of exceptional beauty.
