About
Sayram-Ugam National Park (Kazakh: Сайрам-Өгем ұлттық табиғи паркі) is located in the Turkistan Region of southern Kazakhstan near the border with Uzbekistan. Established in 2006, the park covers approximately 579 square miles (1,500 sq km) and protects a spectacular section of the western Tian Shan Mountains, one of Central Asia’s most important biodiversity hotspots.
Named after the Sayram and Ugam mountain ranges, the park preserves a remarkable variety of landscapes, including snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, deep river valleys, glaciers, and mountain forests. It is one of Kazakhstan’s most ecologically significant protected areas and forms part of the broader Western Tian Shan UNESCO World Heritage region.
The park is best known for its dramatic mountain scenery and exceptional biodiversity. Visitors are attracted by rugged peaks, crystal-clear rivers, alpine lakes, and some of the most scenic trekking routes in southern Kazakhstan. Popular activities include hiking, horseback riding, camping, wildlife observation, mountaineering, and nature photography.
The park’s remote valleys and mountain ridges provide breathtaking views across the western Tian Shan, while spring and summer bring spectacular displays of wildflowers across alpine meadows. Its relatively undeveloped character allows visitors to experience a pristine mountain wilderness that remains largely unchanged by modern development.
Geographically, Sayram-Ugam National Park encompasses a wide range of elevations and ecosystems. The landscape includes steep mountain slopes, glacial valleys, alpine grasslands, conifer forests, rivers, waterfalls, and high-altitude plateaus. Elevations range from approximately 3,300 feet (1,000 m) to peaks exceeding 13,000 feet (4,000 m).
Lower elevations support walnut forests, fruit forests, and juniper woodlands, while higher elevations contain alpine meadows, rocky cliffs, and permanent snowfields. Numerous rivers originate within the park, feeding important watersheds that sustain both wildlife and human communities throughout southern Kazakhstan.
Wildlife within Sayram-Ugam National Park is among the richest in the western Tian Shan. Mammals include snow leopards, brown bears, lynx, wolves, red foxes, Siberian ibex, argali sheep, roe deer, wild boar, and marmots. The park serves as an important refuge for several threatened species, particularly the elusive snow leopard.
Birdlife is equally impressive, with golden eagles, bearded vultures, Himalayan griffon vultures, saker falcons, snowcocks, and numerous alpine bird species inhabiting the mountains. The park also supports a rich diversity of reptiles, amphibians, insects, and more than a thousand plant species, including many endemic to the western Tian Shan.
Sayram-Ugam National Park plays a crucial role in conserving one of Central Asia’s most important mountain ecosystems. The park protects critical wildlife habitat, preserves watersheds, and maintains ecological connectivity across the internationally recognized Western Tian Shan biodiversity hotspot.
Its conservation significance is often compared to Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve and Ala-Archa National Park because of its mountain biodiversity, rare wildlife, and spectacular landscapes. Through its alpine peaks, ancient forests, rich wildlife, and pristine rivers, Sayram-Ugam National Park stands as one of Kazakhstan’s most valuable protected areas and a crown jewel of the western Tian Shan Mountains.
