About
Khadim Nagar National Park (Bengali: খাদিমনগর জাতীয় উদ্যান) is located on the northeastern outskirts of Sylhet in Bangladesh. Established in 2008, the park covers approximately 2.7 square miles (7 sq km) and protects a valuable remnant of tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest within the Sylhet region.
Although relatively small compared to many national parks, Khadim Nagar serves as an important refuge for wildlife and a significant green space for one of Bangladesh’s fastest-growing urban areas. Its accessibility and rich biodiversity have made it one of the most popular nature destinations in northeastern Bangladesh.
The park is best known for its lush forest trails, diverse birdlife, and accessibility from Sylhet. Visitors are attracted by opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, photography, and environmental education. A network of well-maintained trails winds through dense forest, allowing visitors to explore a variety of habitats while observing native wildlife.
Because of its location near Sylhet, the park is frequently used for recreation, research, and conservation awareness programs. The peaceful forest environment offers a welcome contrast to nearby urban development and provides visitors with a chance to experience Bangladesh’s tropical forests firsthand.
Geographically, Khadim Nagar National Park consists of low hills, valleys, streams, and forested ridges characteristic of the Sylhet region. The terrain is gently undulating rather than mountainous, with elevations generally below 300 feet (90 m). The area receives abundant rainfall due to its proximity to the Meghalaya Plateau in neighboring India, supporting lush vegetation throughout much of the year. Evergreen and semi-evergreen forests dominate the landscape, with bamboo groves, native hardwood trees, vines, and dense understory plants contributing to the park’s ecological diversity.
Wildlife within Khadim Nagar National Park is surprisingly diverse given its small size. Mammals include rhesus macaques, capped langurs, civets, mongooses, squirrels, and several species of bats. The park is particularly valued for its birdlife, with more than 150 species recorded. Hornbills, barbets, kingfishers, drongos, woodpeckers, bulbuls, and migratory birds can be observed throughout the forest.
Reptiles such as lizards and snakes inhabit the park, while amphibians thrive in the moist forest environment. Numerous butterflies and insects further contribute to the ecological richness of this protected area.
Khadim Nagar National Park plays an important role in conserving one of the remaining forest ecosystems of northeastern Bangladesh. The park protects biodiversity, preserves watershed functions, and provides habitat connectivity within a region that has experienced significant land-use change.
Its conservation significance is often compared to Lawachara National Park and Satchari National Park because of its tropical forests, bird diversity, and ecological importance. Through its forested hills, rich wildlife, educational value, and accessibility, Khadim Nagar National Park stands as one of Bangladesh’s most important urban-adjacent protected areas and a valuable sanctuary for the natural heritage of the Sylhet region.
